Andrew Barclay (1719-1775)

Sugar Refiner & President of the Saint Andrew's Society, New York City

He was born and educated at Albany, New York, speaking both English and Dutch. After his father died in 1726 he went to New York City and in time was taught business and married into the Roosevelt family which allied him to a number of prominent mercantile families. He went in to business as the co-owner of a sugar house with his brothers-in-law, Jacobus and Isaac Roosevelt (great-x-2-grandfather of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt). He co-founded the Saint Andrew's Society of the State of New York in 1756 and served as its President from 1759 to 1761. He and his wife, Helena, were the parents of seven children who reached adulthood (listed above). They are among the great-x-2-grandparents of the notoriously haughty The Mrs Astor.
