André Monpelas (1798-1851)
André Monpelas, of Monpelas & Violet, Perfumiers, of Paris
He was born in Lyon and came to Paris where in 1833 he co-founded the Monpelas & Violet which quickly became one of the city's best known perfumiers. He was inadvertently one of the 200 victims of the coup d'etat in 1851, shot dead while illuminated in his window at home (181 Rue Saint Martin). His widow subsequently sold the business and with the profits built what is better known today as "L'Hotel Ephrussi-Rothschild on what is Avenue de Foch. He is buried with his wife and children at the Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
