Alexander L. Stewart (1775-1838)

Merchant & Broker, of New York City

He was born in Ireland at Gortlee, Co. Donegal, and in 1791 followed in his uncle's - Charles Stewart's - footsteps by coming to America. Establishing himself as a merchant in New York, he married Sarah, the daughter of Anthony Lispenard who was a first cousin of one of New York's most prominent merchants/stockbrokers, Anthony Lispenard Bleecker. They were the parents of seven children of whom six (listed) survived to adulthood. Their daughter, Matilda, became Mrs Herman Cornell LeRoy.
