Alexander Colden (1716-1784)

Surveyor General of the Province of New York & Postmaster of New York City

He was appointed Ranger of Ulster Co., N.Y., which then included his father's estate "Coldenham" (now within the town limits of Montgomery, Orange County), where he was among the earliest settlers. He was actively engaged as a merchant at Newburgh and in 1751 was appointed joint Surveyor General of New York with his father, succeeding him in 1761 when he moved to New York City. He was a Vestryman at Trinity Church and at the time of his death he was also serving as the city's Post Master. He inherited his father's home "Spring Hill" (see image) in Flushing, L.I., and in 1743 married Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Nicolls, with whom he had 7-children.
