Alexander Allan (1825-1892)

Shipowner, of R. & A. Allan, Glasgow; and, of Blackwell House, Kirkmuirhill

He was the youngest of the five sons of Captain Sandy Allan and like them entered the family shipping business. He and his eldest brother, James, ran the Glasgow business of the Allan Line that was known as J. & A. Allan while their brothers Hugh and Andrew ran the Montreal business known as H. & A. Allan. Their brother Bryce ran the Liverpool Office and by 1884 under these five brothers the Allan Line became the 7th largest shipping line in the world.
