Alex Murdaugh (b.1968)

"Alex" Richard Alexander Murdaugh, Convict & Former Lawyer, of Islandton, S.C.

He graduated from University of South Carolina (1990) and its School of Law (1994) before joining the family law firm Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth & Detrick (PMPED) and volunteering part-time in the 14th-circuit solicitor's office. In 2023, he was convicted of murdering his wife and son (Maggie and Paul) and was given two life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole. In addition, he was disbarred and had all his assets seized. By 2023, he faced, or had been convicted of, a total of 102 grand jury criminal charges and 19 indictments relating to fraud and drug offenses. There were three charges from the Hampton County grand jury and 99 from the State Grand Jury. In May 2026, the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned his murder and weapons possession convictions and ordered a new trial due to jury interference by court clerk Becky Hill. He is currently (2026) imprisoned on a 40-year sentence relating to his theft and fraud convictions. Before it was seized, he lived at "Moselle" 4147 Moselle Road, Islandton, where his wife and younger son were found shot dead near the dog kennels.
