She was born in San Francisco and educated at Stanford University. Widely traveled, she was proficient in several languages including Latin and Greek. She was known for her scholarly work as translator of Renaissance and classic Greek prose. The famous Irish author William Butler Yeats hailed her to be, “the greatest poet that America has produced since Wait Whitman.”
