Adeline (Mitchell) Allan (c.1880-1952)
Mrs "Ada" Adeline Margaret (Mitchell) Allan J.P., O.B.E.
She was the daughter of either Robert or Alexander Mitchell, a pair of brothers who were successful timber merchants in Glasgow. She was an active member of the Red Cross and the local Woman’s Guild and on the outbreak of war in 1939 she was elected a Justice of the Peace as well as an office bearer of the British Red Cross Association. At her home, Kilmahew Castle, she was a keen gardener and served as President of the Scottish National Sweet Pea, Rose & Carnation Society while being one of the leading supporters of the Helensburgh and Gareloch Horticultural Society. After her husband died in 1945, she sold Kilmahew and lived out her final days at the Ardardan estate. She was the mother of two sons and two daughters: Charlie; Bobby, Baron Allan of Kilmahew; Sheena, Mrs Peter Wilson; and, Marion, Mrs Dennis Wilson Harrison Last.
