Zachary Taylor House
5608 Apache Road, Louisville, Kentucky
Built from 1792, for Lt.-Colonel Richard Lee Taylor (1744-1829) and his wife, Sarah Strother (1760-1822). This was both the childhood and adult home of General Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), 12th President of United States: It was where he was married in 1810 and where five of his six children were born. After Zachary's father died in 1829, much of the land was sold to settle his debts, but the house remained in the Taylor family until 1868. Both father and son chose to be buried here in what is now known as the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery. The Taylor plantation had at one time encompassed some 700-acres, but today it is reduced to just three-quarters of an acre. It has always remained a private home, but no tours are available to the public.
