Whitehall
1 Whitehall Way, Palm Beach, Florida
Completed in 1901, for Henry Morrison Flagler (1830-1913) as a wedding present for his new (third) wife, Mary Lily Kenan (1867-1917). Built around an open-air palm court and modelled on the palazzos of Italy, their marble palace was in many ways a miniature version of the New York Public Library. Designed by the same architects, Carrère & Hastings (who Flagler had already used to build Miami's Ponce de Leon Hotel), it covers 60,000-square feet and has 55-rooms, notably the 4,800-square foot Grand Hall with its massive domed ceiling depicting a mural of the Oracle of Delphi....

After the Flagler's died, it served as the lobby and offices for the Whitehall Hotel that stood directly behind. The hotel closed in 1959 when Flagler's granddaughter, Jean Flagler Matthews, donated the lion's share of the required capital that allowed the Flagler Foundation to repurchase Whitehall which since then has been open to the public known as the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, attracting over 100,000 visitors a year.
