Mrs Adelaide (Torrance) Howland, of Cannes, France; died without children

1846-1932

The Howlands were said to be the only Americans in Cannes admitted into the inner circle of the leading French and English residents who made the town fashionable. Their villa stood on the grounds of the Grand Hotel of Cannes and after Mrs Howland's death in 1932 it became the hotel's gaming and tea room. Today, the villa is called "La Malmaison," the last Belle Epoque remnant of what was the Grand Hotel complex. It still stands on the seafront and today houses an art exposition known as the "Centre d'Art La Malmaison".
