The Yard
Hot Springs, Bath County, Virginia
Built in 1925, for Fay Ingalls (1882-1957) and his wife Rachel Gaff Holmes (1885-1966). Fay had been a lawyer in New York, living at Sunken Orchard on Long Island. But, the Ingalls grew tired of New York society and they came to Hot Springs where Fay would run "The Homestead Hotel" established by his father, railroad tycoon Melville E. Ingalls. They commissioned Stanley Matthews and C.W. Short, Jr. of Cincinnati to build them their new 15-bedroom Tudor-style mansion which featured an inner courtyard surrounded on three sides. Mrs Ingalls was a noted horsewoman and the house was designed specifically with her passion in mind. There were hitching posts in the inner courtyard and they kept their own pack of hounds in kennels on the grounds for hunting. Other outbuildings on the estate included the "chauffeurs shed".
