Teviotdale
Linlithgo, Columbia County, New York
Built in 1774, for Walter Livingston (1740-1797), 1st Speaker of the New York State Assembly, and his wife, Cornelia Schuyler (1746-1822). Having already made a name for himself as a successful merchant, he built this mansion on part of the 28,000-acres he inherited from his father. The house then became the summer home of his youngest daughter, Mrs Harriet Fulton, until her first husband died and she moved in permanently with their children before remarrying Charles Augustus Dale. It passed through several more hands before becoming abandoned in the 1920s. Fifty years later, it was restored by the interior designer Harrison Cultra (1941-1983) and his partner, Richard Barker. The finished result featured in the June 1980 issue of Architectural Digest.
