Osceola

25 Cliffwood Street, Lenox, Berkshire County, Massachusetts

Built in 1889, for Edward McEvers Livingston (1856-1938) and his wife Sarah McAlpine Pollack. Their 7,400 square foot, 14-room home was designed by Rotch & Tilden, the society architects whose other work included nearby Ventfort Hall. The Livingstons named the house for the Osceola Mountain over which it enjoyed a spectacular view from its 80-foot long veranda at the back. The Livingstons were part of Edith Wharton's set in the Berkshires and divided their time between here and their other home, Villa Clermont, at Pau in the South of France. They sold the house in 1921 and sometime after the Second World War, it was renamed "The Castle". More recently it was a bed-and-breakfast known as "Cliffwood Inn" before being placed on the market in 2019 as a private home on just over an acre of land with an asking price of $2.6 million.
