Mount Hope
Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York
Built in 1819, for Jacobus "James" Roosevelt (1760-1847) and his third wife, Harriet Howland (1784-1856). In December, 1818, James purchased the estate and built the Federal-style mansion on top of the hill and just to the north of where the Hudson River State Hospital currently stands. He summered here with his family from 1819 up until his death in 1847. In 1832, his eldest son, Isaac Daniel Roosevelt, built Rosedale on an adjoining estate and in 1847 James willed Mount Hope to Isaac's eldest son, James Roosevelt (1828-1900). It burned down in 1866 and as a replacement James purchased Springwood. The following year (1867), James sold the Mount Hope estate to the State of New York and the Hudson River State Hospital still occupies the site today.
