Moray Lodge

Camden Hill, Kensington, London

Built in 1817, it was one of several similar large mansions in the area developed by John Tasker. Containing 20-bed and dressing rooms and surrounded by 4.5-acres of landscaped gardens, it enjoyed extensive views over London from its eminence at the top of Camden Hill. Its longest occupant was Arthur James Lewis (1824-1901), a silk mercer who with his wife, the actress Kate Terry, hosted frequent dramatic and musical soirees here that were attended and participated in by the likes of Thackeray, Trollope and Leighton. Those who took part became well-known as the "Moray Minstrels"....

The Lewis' were the grandparents of the great English actor and director, Sir John Gielgud (1904-2000). In the early 1900s, Mrs Lewis leased it for one summer to the New York publisher, Joseph Pulitzer, who was by then suffering from an acute sensitivity to noise. Unfortunately the noise of the peacocks from Kensington Palace saw him move to another mansion. It was demolished in 1955 and Holland Park School now stands in its place.
