Martin Hall
Great Neck, Nassau County, New York
Built circa 1900, for James E. Martin (1846-1905) and his wife Florence Brokaw (1857-1927). Martin was the uncle of Bradley Martin whose brother-in-law lived at Old Westbury Gardens. Martin Hall was designed by Little & Connor. Seven years after Martin was tragically killed with their son in a car crash on Christmas Eve, Florence remarried Dr Preston Pope Satterwhite (1867-1948), a physician and an art connoisseur for whom the Satterwhite Wing was named at the Speed Art Museum. Dr Satterwhite contracted the Olmsted Brothers to landscape the gardens from 1915 to 1918. After Florence died, he continued to make his home there, but in 1932 a short-circuit on the organ triggered a fire that burned the house to the ground - along with much of Dr Satterwhite's prized art collection, valued at $1.5 million.
