Lyman House

Built circa 1785, for the widowed Theodore Lyman (1753-1839) before he was joined here by his second wife, Lydia Pickering Williams. On its completion it was regarded as one of the finest houses in the area. On July 27th, 1785, one visitor wrote in his diary: "My wife and I went to Kennebunk to visit Mr Theodore Lyman and his sister Lucy and to see his new seat. It is fit for a nobleman, and I have seen nothing like it in this country, and scarcely anywhere". The Lymans moved to Boston in 1790 and are today best associated with the Lyman Estate at Waltham. Their home at Kennebunk was afterwards occupied by Henry Kingsbury who had built many of the vessels in which Lyman had made his fortune in the West Indian Trade. Its fate after that is unclear.
