Lanier-Schofield House

Built in 1817, for Alexander Chalmers Lanier (1778-1820) and his wife, Drusilla Cleaves Doughty (1778-1838). Located in the Madison Historic District, their home was the first two-story brick house and the first tavern in Madison. In 1818, Lanier was one of fourteen fellow Freemasons who established the Grand Lodge for Indiana in the upstairs tavern room. After Mrs Lanier died here, their son James (who shortly afterwards built the Lanier Mansion) sold the house to the Schofield family in whose family it would remain until acquired by the Scottish Rite Freemasons in 1972. Today, the house is operated as a house museum, funded by the Indiana Freemasons.
