Jonathan Sturges House

449 Mill Plain Road, Fairfield, Connecticut

Built in 1840 for Jonathan Sturges (1802-1874) and his wife Mary Pemberton Cady (1806-1894), it was designed by Joseph Collins Wells and is a good example of architect-designed Gothic Revival Architecture. With more than 30-rooms and 11-staircases, the house has a wood-frame structure and is made up of four parts. The main house was the original build with three other parts added in 1846, 1883 and 1890. There has been little alteration since then and the house has remained in the family. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1994 for its architectural significance and was the childhood home of the first wife of "America's Greatest Banker" J.P. Morgan.
