Joiner-Long House

604 Prairie Avenue, Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas

Built 1895, for John Bee Joiner (1860-1924) and his wife, Martha Mackie Smith (1861-1934). Joiner, the son of Confederate soldier John Elliot Joiner (1824-1905), was a local insurance and real estate agent in the city. The Cleburne Daily Enterprise then described the house as, "a handsome structure that would be fitted up with all modern improvements". In 1912, Joiner sold the home to Joseph Benjamin Long (1876-1939), who lived there with his wife Lorena Brown (1888-1969). In 1921, Long became President of the Home National Bank at a time when the bank's assets totalled in excess of $1.25 million. He played a leading role in many of Cleburne's organizations and clubs, helping to  promote its growth and development. He served as the secretary-treasurer of the Cleburne National Farm Loan Association and was on the Board of Directors of the Farm Gin of Cleburne. He also was one of the first directors of the Cleburne Chamber of Commerce, and was president of the Board of Education at a time when the city boasted of having one of the best school systems in the state of Texas. Architecturally, the Joiner-Long House is described as "a transitional Queen Anne". The Joiner-Long house is Cleburne and Johnson County's only private residence to be designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, listed in the National Register of Historic Places and a State Antiquities Landmark.
