Inveraray Castle
Inveraray Castle, Inveraray, Perthshire
Built in 1746, for the 5th Duke of Argyll as the new seat of the Chiefs of Clan Campbell of Argyll. This replaced an earlier castle that had stood since the 15th century. Inveraray is one of the earliest examples of Gothic-Revival architecture. It was designed by William Adam and Roger Morris, with interiors completed by Robert Mylne. A fire in 1975 caused much damage but it has been since been restored with financial aid coming from many of the clan's representatives across the world....
The castle and its 60,000-acres is currently home to the family of Torquil Campbell, 13th Duke of Argyll (whose American grandmother, Louise, died at Grasmere in New York) but it is also open to visitors and holds a spectacular collection of weaponry. Inveraray featured as "Duneagle Castle" in the 2012 Christmas episode of Downton Abbey.
