Haddo House
Haddo House, Ellon, Aberdeenshire
Built from 1732, for William Gordon (1679-1746), 2nd Earl of Aberdeen, and his third wife, Lady Anne Gordon (1713-1791). Haddo was designed by the foremost architect of the time in Scotland, William Adam (1689-1748) in the Palladian style, while the present interior was completely refurbished in 1880. Its most notable residents were the British Prime Minister, Lord Aberdeen (1784-1860) and then his grandson, the Marquess of Aberdeen (1847-1934), 7th Governor-General of Canada. The historic Mount Airy Plantation built in 1764 in Virginia was inspired by Haddo. Today, Haddo House is maintained by the National Trust for Scotland and the mansion, gardens and adventure playground are all open to the public.
