Billy Bishop Museum

948 Third Avenue West, Owen Sound, Grey County, Ontario

Built in 1884, for William Avery Bishop Sr. (1859-1921) and his wife, Margaret Louise Greene (1858-1936). William was the County Registrar who three years previously had married his American wife (a native of Louisiana) at Owen Sound. They were the parents of Billy Bishop V.C. who was born and grew up here before becoming the top Fighter Ace across the British Empire with 72 victories in World War One. After the war, he briefly (and unsuccessfully) went into business with his cousin's husband, Billy Barker, another Ace who remains the most decorated military figure in Canadian history and was the first President of the Toronto Maple Leafs....

1894-1956

Billy Bishop lived here until 1911 when he left to study at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston. He himself divided the rest of his life between England, Montreal and the Laurentian Mountains, but his childhood home remained in the Bishop family until 1987, when it was opened to the public as the Billy Bishop Heritage Museum. Some say the house is haunted: Lights flicker, doors slam and voices have been heard - female voices though, not Billy's!
