Batemans
Bateman's Lane, Burwash, East Sussex
Built in 1634, either for one John Britten or William Langham. Its most famous occupant was the great storyteller Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), who lived here with his American wife, Caroline Starr Balestier (1862-1939), and their two surviving children. Having made their home at Naulakha in Vermont, a series of family tragedies brought them back to England and having fallen in love with Batemans they bought it in 1902 and gave it a much-needed renovation. He referred to his home as, "a good and peaceable place". After Carrie died, she willed the house and its contents to the National Trust and it remains open to the public today as a museum dedicated to Kipling.
