The Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge: Authorized, Expanded, and Annotated Edition Paperback – January 11, 2021

—President Calvin Coolidge on his autobiography
Today Americans of all backgrounds are on the hunt for a different political model. In fact, such a model awaits them, if only they turn their eyes to their own past . . . to America's thirtieth president, Calvin Coolidge.
Coolidge's masterful autobiography offers urgent lessons for our age of exploding debt, increasingly centralized power, and fierce partisan division. This expanded and annotated volume, edited by Coolidge biographer Amity Shlaes and authorized by the Coolidge family, is the definitive edition of the text that presidential historian Craig Fehrman calls "the forgotten classic of presidential writing." To read this volume is to understand the tragic extent to which historians underrate President Coolidge. The Coolidge who emerges in these pages is a model of character, principle, and humility—rare qualities in Washington, then as now. A man of great faith, Coolidge told Americans: "Men do not make laws. They do but discover them." Although he emphasized economics, Coolidge insisted on the importance of "things of the spirit." At the height of his popularity, he chose not to run again when his reelection was all but assured.
In this autobiography, Coolidge explains his mindset: "It is a great advantage to a President, and a major source of safety to the country, for him to know that he is not a great man." For all his modesty, Coolidge left an expansive legacy—one we would do well to study today.
Shlaes and coeditor Matthew Denhart draw out the lessons from Coolidge's life and career in an enlightening introduction and annotations to Coolidge's text. To aid Coolidge scholars young and old, the editors have also assembled nearly three dozen photographs, several of Coolidge's greatest speeches, a timeline of Coolidge's life, and afterwords by former Vermont governor James H. Douglas and two of Coolidge's great-grandchildren, Jennifer Coolidge Harville and Christopher Coolidge Jeter. This autobiography combats the myths about one of our most misunderstood presidents. It also shows us how much we still have to learn from Calvin Coolidge.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2024Haven't yet finished it, but am thoroughly enjoying getting acquainted with Mr. Coolidge. Love the fact he started out as a young progressive, but his New England (dare I say, Puritan?) work ethic and practical, common sense kicked in and he quickly became a conservative fully on board with very limited government, and low taxes coupled with low government spending. He used those to help pull the U.S. out of the depression which came with the end of WW I, and soon resulted in the Roaring 20s due to the economic recovery. Time and time again, conservatives prove that LOWERING tax rates results in MORE tax revenue due to the booming economy. However, the missing ingredient is also putting hard limits on government SPENDING, something both parties today seem incapable of doing.
Any way, that's probably too political for today's sensibilities. Politics aside, Coolidge is a very understated, under-studied president. We need to bring his wisdom to today. AND he was even humble enough to take himself out of running for a second term even while at the top of his game and popularity, truly believing one can stay in the game too long.
The added plus to this version of Coolidge's autobiography, is the addition of an appendix with some of his speeches (all written by him), and many insightful footnotes added by the editor providing explanation and context for some of the people and events mentioned by Coolidge.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2022Very insightful book! Coolidge was an excellent writer and tells his story in an engaging manner. Lots of wisdom here. One can only wish that our present politicians would read Coolidge and take his philosophy to heart!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2021Calvin Coolidge is one of those "nondescript" presidents who most of us don't know much about. If anything, we have read bits of trivia. He was sworn in by his father in his parents' kitchen when President Harding died. His teenage son died of blood poisoning shortly after he became president. He had a reputation for being a very quiet man - earning him the nickname "Silent Cal." Certainly not a riveting page turner, but definitely an insight into the personality of a man who dedicated his life to public service. His intelligence, patriotism, and even sense of humor radiate from every page. American life and the logistics of government in Washington nearly one hundred years ago are yet another fascinating aspect of this book. It truly was a different day and age. An informative read!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2021This book is very interesting and covers life and politics from another era as viewed by a man who made history himself. Coolidge has been much underrated and compares very favorably with today's leaders and politicians.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2021Excellent. Educated Generations Ahead!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2025Boring book. Seems like half of it was recollections of childhood. When he finally gets to the presidency, it sounds like he just attended ceremonies. Almost no historical events discussed.
