Philadelphia's 1876 Centennial Exhibition (PA) (Images of America) Paperback – August 22, 2005
Purchase options and add-ons
Held in Philadelphia from May 10 through October 10, the 1876 Centennial Exhibition celebrated the 100th anniversary of American independence.
Philadelphia hosted 37 nations in five main buildings and 250 additional structures on 285 acres of land. The celebration looked backward to commemorate the progress made over the 100-year period, and it announced to the world that American invention and innovation was on a par with that of our foreign counterparts. Patriotism abounded, as did messages of industrial and commercial prowess that promised a brighter future for all. Over nine million people attended this awesome consumer spectacle, an event that set the tone for a long series of world's fairs yet to come.

More History from the Mid-Atlantic | The Lehigh Valley Railroad established the Bethlehem Iron Company in 1860 along the Lehigh River in South Bethlehem. The Bethlehem Iron Company manufactured the largest steel axle to date to support the first Ferris wheel at the 1893 World's Fair. | More than fifty-one million guests visited the fair before it closed forever in 1965. The 1964-1965 New York World's Fair captures the history of this event through vintage photographs, published here for the first time. | mages of America: Building Washington National Cathedral divides the 20th century into decades to detail what must be the first published beginning-to-completion photographic record of the construction of a Gothic cathedral. | Prince George's County, one of Maryland's most populous counties, has a rich and vibrant history. | The Morris Canal, once an important soldier in the American Industrial Revolution, has been gone for most of the 20th century, but its memory lives on in the many photographs, postcards, and other memorabilia that its unique presence inspired. | The memorable photographs and detailed captions in Images of America: Dover offer a fascinating look at the nation's first state capital, including its residents, events, farms, and local architecture. |

- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2012My Great Grandfather was at the Centennial celbration. He represented Italy and its "exotic" food then known as "macaroni and other pastes."
My Grandfather (Biagio Russo) was from Palermo, Sicily and to see life in the US must have shocked the 25 year old man. One culd walk about without armed guards in Philly, then--not Sicily.
The book is a good start if one is looking for leads to study more on the Centennial. In fact, there are two Delaware Librarians to contact to follow up on any info on the Centennial.
This book is a good start. Full of pictures and info to follow up on--but if one wants more details--you will have to follow the leads presented in the book--because there are not a lot on this topic.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2014Excellent, but best viewed on an IPad instead of a Kindle as there are lots of very interesting photos.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2012This book leaves out more than it gives you but the images are great. If you a student of American History you might find this book interesting. I gave it 3 stars but it's really only a 2 1/2.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2012Just what I needed. The book is funkier than I thought it would be, but it worked well enough. Some of the photos are very sharp. Ah, those old view cameras. It's always fascinating to enter bygone worlds.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2016Covered all the major exhibitions at the fair with plenty of pictures so you could get an Idea of how expansive and detailed it was.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2017Makes you want to go to Fairmont Park !
