About the author

Ed Morris is a veteran reporter for two Connecticut newspapers and was a correspondent for the United Press International's Berlin Bureau just before the construction of the Berlin Wall by Communist East Germany. A graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, he has also served as a tour guide for several Newport historical organizations for many years.
As a step-on bus guide for cruise ship visitors to Newport he developed this coachman's script twelve years ago. After showing it to Pieter Roos, then education director of the Newport Historical Society, he was hired to research Newport's Cliff Walk and give tours to Newport tourists for six years. That tour , published as A Guide to Newport's Cliff Walk, has sold over seven thousand copies.
This companion volume is enlivened with more stories about those rogues and heroes of Newport's Gilded Age. Morris has made extensive use of the Newport Historical Society's research facilities, printed reports and many other sources, but the responsibility for the material contained herein is his own.
Here is a Reader's Preview of Author's Companion Books:
"Rogues & Heroes of Newport's Gilded Age" provides insights into the early Colonial world of Newport, R.I., and then into its development into the summer resort for wealthy New York millionaires of the Industrial Revolution, where they played tennis, golf and polo, and sailed their fabulous yachts!
Author Ed Morris wrote this new book as a companion piece to his "A Guide To Newport's Cliff Walk," which has 48 color photos and five areal maps, and has sold more than 7,000 copies. The new "Rogues & Heroes" book with its 57 photos is also a coachman's guide to other summer palaces not on Cliff Walk--as well as insights into the operational practices of such architects as Richard Hunt, Charles McKim and Stanford White and wealthy clients like Mrs Astor.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2021Noticed several spelling errors and “Mary lee Curtis” instead of Jamie Lee Curtis. Is like a tour guide and offers local flavor, however some stories are redundant and told multiple times in different locations in the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2022Where did all the money go? Why were the cottages so grand? Great read with the inside story on the accumulation & loss of money made during the Gilded Age. Nothing was too expensive, too ornate or ostentatious for the architects to create with their magic wands. Preservation groups have taken over most of the mansions, gardens & parks. Many mansions are open all year offering guided tours. Great fun!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2023Interesting information was given about key characters in Newport's history in the first half of book. The tour given in the second half is filled with gaps that would cause one to get hopelessly lost without the assistance of Google maps. Examples include not telling readers to turn left on Spring St from Memorial Blvd, not telling readers to drive around Washington Sq to get on Clarke St, not telling readers how to get on Wellington Ave from Harrison.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2013This book makes Newport come alive. Sure, you can drive all around Newport's streets and see all the mansions one after the other, but Ed Morris provides the "inside story" about the lives of the real folks who lived in these mansions, their personalities and eccentricities.
Ed Morris is a seasoned journalist with a flair for getting to the heart of the story
"Thaw, who had been sitting in the rear table with Evelyn, pulled a pistol out of his coat pocket, walked up to White's table and shot him three times in the head, shouting "You'll never go out with that woman again!" He threw the gun on the floor. The music stopped, and the audience dashed for the exits. The police arrived and took Thaw into custody." Ed Morris makes history exciting.
The book is broken into three parts. The first part explains the colorful colonial history of Newport. The second includes biographies of famous Newporters like Commodore Matthew C. Perry ("We have met the enemy, and they are ours."), the filthy rich August Belmont, and the architects Alfred Smith, James G. Bennett, Richard Morris Hunt, and Stanford White (the guy who got the three bullets in his head).
Chapter 3 is the "Coachman's Drive-Around Tour." It starts in the downtown Harbor Front, proceeds up the Historic Hill, out Bellevue Avenue, along Ocean Drive, and back via Harrison Avenue to Thames Street. If you take this one-hour drive, you'll see lots of beautiful scenes and architecture. But if you've got Ed Morris's book with you, you'll know what happened inside these beautiful homes and all the dirt on the inhabitants of these "summer cottages."
Ed Morris's book will raise your tour of Newport to a whole new level. Don't leave home without it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2019A map would have been excellent to include unless I just didn’t get one with the digital version of the book
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2023Having visited Newport in the past, I thoroughly enjoyed the authors guide to this historic city, it's homes and all the incidental pieces of information. If you're planning a trip to Newport, RI this guide is a must!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2020Glitz & Glamour, China & Silver..All the Gossip of the Guilded Age is combined in this condensed tale! My late Mother & Grandparents shared many of these same stories of Newport as regular citizens in the 20th century, but added even more "spice" as friends of the younger generation of the monied "Elders" who left behind so many regrets and unclaimed fortunes, not to mention, "Ghosts!" We may be able to share some of their stories in time to come...
