A Fun Look At Newport Through A Child's Perspective!
I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet little book from the first chapter to the last! Jay certainly has a way with his story telling abilities. This was funny, sarcastic at times, sincere and educational as well. I'm looking forward to the next installment 😉Terri SchindlerOakland Park, FL.

LaCroix has a gift for telling the stories of the small moments that make up all our lives. His childhood memories of Newport in the 1950's and 60's as the child of a French father descended from a 17th Century Quebec family and an Irish-American mother are enriched by a keen sense of the world around him. We are there with him when he tenderly recalls a world now gone, but remembered.

You'll not see the story of the JFK/Jackie wedding told quite this way anywhere else!

I read it in one sitting and am only sorry there wasn't more.

I was delighted with Mr LaCroix's stories. While Newport Rhode Island is a unique place his humorous sketches of crafty priests, strict Catholic dogma , and small town religious stratification will bring back memories to anyone growing up Catholic in the middle of the last century. Mr Lacroix has been blessed with a whole stable of eccentric relatives who have provided material for humorous but poignant anecdotes. Altogether Newport Tales is a charming read.

Nice stories told well. Family stories, Quebec and Providence stories, not as much about Newport as I’d hoped. Oh well.

This is an extremely entertaining book with lots of insight into the people of the day who are making history. Mr. LaCroix gave me new insights into a City I thought I knew and framed those insights in a very entertaining way.

Jay LaCroix's Newport Tales is a glimpse into the post-World War II past of Newport. In is arranged in chapters that are true anecdotes of his childhood and adolescence ranging from the late Forties to the early Sixties. One of the most poignant memories is when the author is taken to Boston by his mother to meet his father for the first time when the troop train arrives bringing back the soldiers from overseas. The young boy has never met his father who has been at war during the first two years of his childhood. After a confused and emotional greeting, the family goes to a hotel where his parents put him to bed while they do what husband and wife would do after so long an absence. Then, as the crowd swells in the square outside the window to celebrate the news that America has won the war, they awake the child. Rubbing his eyes and looking at all the people below, the boy feels suddenly proud. They have all come, he thinks, to honor his father for bravery in the war!

Not all the stories are as tender. The clearing of the streets of "undesirables" (the homeless and alcoholics) and shipping them across the bay to Jamestown when Eisenhower was to ride in a parade through town shows the callousness of the time. The unthinking prejudice in the Fifties that was comfortable with the self-exclusion of the single black teacher from faculty parties is also recounted with unsparing detail. The foolishness of a Catholic pastor in refusing to marry a young congressman and his sweetheart is exposed when the congressman from Boston becomes President of the United States and Jackie the First Lady.

If you're looking for the Newport of the Astors, the Vanderbilts and Doris Duke, this is not the place. It is more a personal history of the times with family stories and endearing moments. But is does give the reader a snapshot of the adolescent years of a child born during the war, and the Newport of Destroyer Fleet Atlantic, sailor bars along Thames Street, and Mamie Eisenhower shopping for snap-on pearls in Woolworths. The latter anecdote alone is worth the price of admission.
